Interesting. The iPhone camera is probably a ccd. A CCD by definition (wikipedia) is: "Charge-coupled device, an electronic light sensor used in digital cameras". My Sekonic uses silicon photo diode. Definition for this is: "Photosensors or photodetectors are sensors of light". Any light meter 'interpolates' the energy received into something meaningful for the users application.
I tested it against one of the best current meters on the market. I'd use it if I didn't have my Sekonic available.
Applying your logic, an iPhone is NOT a camera...yet Chase Jarvis has published a well received book from iphone photos.
