You may not agree with these themes, but they serve a function, and that is to bring new ideas - often controversial - into the public discourse. I didn't know art, religion, or patriotism was supposed to be homogeneous. Everyone used to agree slavery was acceptable. They they believed segregation was acceptable. Art of this sort often comments on what the majority agrees is "acceptable", turns it on its head, and maybe even satirizes it. What most of us do at art shows isn't in this genre. We tend to sell Beauty. Nothing wrong with that. But artists who explore other areas will not make a living selling directly to a public who wants to be comforted, not afflicted. That's why public funding is important. It allows other voices into the public discourse, not just those you personally want to hear or see.
