In all candor, I think the "answer" is self evident. I doubt there's a single photographer out there making more on his/her website (or possibly other venues as well) than at shows. And if there actually is one, he/she is by far the exception. Believe me, if artists, in general, could sell as well online or in galleries as they do in person at a show, I think shows would soon become ghost towns.
I believe a website is more of an ego stroker than it is a cash cow. Gallery sales can be lucrative at times, but seldom is it as consistent a money maker as the show circuit. Again, there will always be an exception, but that's the point here - I doubt there's a better venue, especially for artsy or landscape/nature images, than the show circuit.
