And of course there was the time we were living in NM, and we were
stopped on I40 where they check for illegal immigrants. The border
patrol were not very friendly, asked if we were citizens, and were
ready to wave us on (we are all white) and I said NO (I'm my wife's
alien relative - you can see the antennas on my head - actually I'm
Australian) - just to make them do their work and not assume on skin
color. Meanwhile the dogs were going mad in the back of the car.
The other border crossing of interest - when I was living in Canada
(NB) - we would often go to NH to go rock climbing. Coming back one
night the Canadian border patrol searched the truck - under the seats,
in the glove box. But just asked us what was under the tarps in the
back of the truck (all our camping and climbing gear) - but didn't
look at all.
This was all pre 9/11
