Taking a stab at it, but could this be simply because of the number of cross type focus targets vs. non-cross type targets (when not using live view)?
I am not familiar with the E-30 but my E-520 only has three AF points and only one is a cross type.
Perhaps an experiment would be to change AF to use only ONE (the center) focus point and see if the camera still acts differently in vertical and horizontal orientations?
