Changes to Google Privacy Policy and Terms of Service

Is this email not displaying properly?
View it in your browser.

Dear Google user,

We're getting rid of over 60 different privacy policies across Google and replacing them with one that's a lot shorter and easier to read. Our new policy covers multiple products and features, reflecting our desire to create one beautifully simple and intuitive experience across Google.

We believe this stuff matters, so please take a few minutes to read our updated Privacy Policy and Terms of Service at http://www.google.com/policies. These changes will take effect on March 1, 2012.

One policy, one Google experience
Easy to work across Google Tailored for you Easy to share and collaborate
Easy to work across Google

Our new policy reflects a single product experience that does what you need, when you want it to. Whether you're reading an email that reminds you to schedule a family get-together or finding a favorite video that you want to share, we want to ensure you can move across Gmail, Calendar, Search, YouTube, or whatever your life calls for with ease.

Tailored for you

If you're signed into Google, we can do things like suggest search queries – or tailor your search results – based on the interests you've expressed in Google+, Gmail, and YouTube. We'll better understand which version of Pink or Jaguar you're searching for and get you those results faster.

Easy to share and collaborate

When you post or create a document online, you often want others to see and contribute. By remembering the contact information of the people you want to share with, we make it easy for you to share in any Google product or service with minimal clicks and errors.

Protecting your privacy hasn't changed

Our goal is to provide you with as much transparency and choice as possible, through products like Google Dashboard and Ads Preferences Manager, alongside other tools. Our privacy principles remain unchanged. And we'll never sell your personal information or share it without your permission (other than rare circumstances like valid legal requests).

Got questions?
We've got answers.

Visit our FAQ at http://www.google.com/policies/faq to read more about the changes. (We figured our users might have a question or twenty-two.)

Notice of Change

March 1, 2012 is when the new Privacy Policy and Terms will come into effect. If you choose to keep using Google once the change occurs, you will be doing so under the new Privacy Policy and Terms of Service.

Please do not reply to this email. Mail sent to this address cannot be answered. Also, never enter your Google Account password after following a link in an email or chat to an untrusted site. Instead, go directly to the site, such as mail.google.com or www.google.com/accounts. Google will never email you to ask for your password or other sensitive information.

Re: Selling Stock Photography Pinterest and Copyright

Certainly interesting.

These copyright issues more and more start to feel like a whole herd of pink elephants in the room.

I don't have any magic solution, but put on your thinking cap and crank up the little grey cells, I know it hurts, and try to find ways to use the systems to your advantage before we made all lawyers billionaires. You don't have to win every battle to win the war.

The copyright laws were written for the old ways and days, pieces of film, books, paper, paintings, etc. and technology has run it over and massacred it many times over, it just won't lay down.

Thinking of the Megaupload issues and the guys arrested in New Zealand. I use places as Megauppload to transfer my big files to clients, so is it now that Big Business and Big Brother are going to sue ISP's, shipping container manufacturers, pilots and ship captains, warehouse owners, truck drivers, computer makers, memory makers, for aiding piracy. Looks like we are getting to that point. Countries as Sweden already has a "piracy tax" on all portable memory devices, as CD's, memory sticks, and portable HDD. They "could" be used for piracy activities. Everyone has to pay the tax though and it goes to the Big Business. To me it is modern dictatorship, and we as the small guy has no say.

Remember, we are the small guys, and the more complex and draconian system the more the Big Business wins on our expense, it is us that get trampled in the end, by the big guys, what I call the copyright Mafia. We earlier talked about how the middle man, many stock photo sites, start to control our sales and the prices we get for our work.

I'm sure you mean "watermarked" submissions, which makes sense, as who would want to license an image with a big watermark on it?

Another good reason to give them the "finger", just my humble view. You need to be in control, not the middle man.

Always put your logo and better email in one bottom corner of every picture you put on the web.

Joe:

While I agree in principal, my recollection of the past is very different. However,
before I get into my comments about editors and agencies, I really want to stress
how much I agree with your points about how much more fair stock photo agencies are
to photographers than they were just a few decades ago.

The present system makes it so impossible for one photographer to dominate an agency
that newcomers to the industry can't even imagine what we're talking about. The very
nature of how our business is conducted today makes it impossible for one person to -
say - make half the sales of an entire large agency. (as was common 25 years ago).
It's much easier to get a foot in the door today than ever before.

Markets and agencies are two different things though and you confuse the two at your
own risk. If you think that being in stock photo agencies can help you break into
any market - you'd be sadly mistaken. Those editors who were hard to reach years ago
are still hard to reach - and you still have to reach them to break into the real
markets.

Worst and most facinating though is the way the internet brings hundreds or
thousands of people together in these discussions. This creates a whole mythology
intended to explain the present situation. Take it from somebody who was there;
there was no golden age of stock photography for most people. Tales of a glorious
past should be viewed with extreme caution.

Selling Stock Photography Re: watermark copywrite

michael,

I just convert my copyright into a brush then I can size it to fit any image and I can select a color from the image to use for the copyright so that compliments rather than detracts from the image.

[artshow_photo] ACT Insurance and/or Brower Artist Insurance

We are shopping around for new liability and property coverage and I have looked at ACT Insurance, Brower and RLI. I am finding that RLI's premium is rather high for what the coverage provides and I am leaning towards ACT or Brower but I wanted other artists opinions or experience working with these companies. Anything you can share is appreciated.

Don:

Thank you very much. I appreciate you saying this.

Sadly, it's my suspicion that you'll never get the answers you're looking for from an internet
discussion group. You really need to get out and talk to people who are at the top of their
game and they're not here.

Re: Selling Stock Photography What is art?

I remember the old saying that photography is not art, but art is not photography. So it is maybe more true than you thought of when you wrote it that your work is art, photography is your tool to create art. With photography we can also create many other things, as news, stories, information, records, etc.

A paint brush can be used to paint the lines on a road, not exactly art, but also a Rembrandt. A pen can be used to write an address, not exactly poetry, and think on.

The secondary question then become, what is art. For me it is what I enjoy, then I don't give a toss about the efforts it took to create it or what anyone else thinks.

An analogy about those sharp photos. If people tell you what a brilliant website you have, get rid of it instantly. Usually it is in Flash. You want them to notice your photos, not the website, sorry, your art I mean. :-)

This talk about what is art and what isn't reminds me of a kind of off topic story I will share...

I did one art show in my life. Didn't sell anything. The photos I presented were mainly of rock musicians performing or 'rocker lifestyle' type of subjects.

The exhibitor next to me was presenting his black and white, out of focus pictures of women bound, gagged and tied up. He looked over and sneered at me, and I heard him comment out loud to someone, while clearly looking my way, that "Some of this crap here isn't even art"....

Make what you will of that story. Carry on....
