[artshow_photo] Re: My First Show.

The problem with your first year is you don't know what you don't know. You know tents and bins and materials but you don't know until you sell it what sells. The best advice I got in my first year from someone who has done shows for years full time, is you have to do it for 3 years before you can decide if it is a go or not, to average out the good shows and the bad shows, the shows that were good this year, and then bad next year and the weather. By year 2 I had a much better idea of what was marketable, the pictures I thought for sure would sell didn't and the ones I thought no one would buy sold....go figure. (As in...really...you want to buy this one ???) By the second year you know that you may only want to print 3 of that one instead of the 10 you did in year one, and you have started to add new pics to diversify what you are offering. You get better at the sales techniques and how to manage people, those times when they are trying to decide between 2 and you slide in a "well you could get both you know" and it works.....Wow this sales stuff is powerful stuff! You figure out what powerful picture you need on the back wall or out front to draw people in, and you know exactly when to start to talk and when to leave them alone. It takes time to figure it all out. I've been doing it for 7 years and I have to say it took 3 years to really hit my mark. Good luck, once you start to have success it becomes so much more enjoyable, but I still say to myself in setup..."why am I doing this again" and I still doubt myself when in a 4 day show I sell little on the thursday and friday knowing that on the saturday and sunday it will all come together and be successful. I have to say, I'm having a blast at it!

I sold nothing, but did have a good number of folks coming through my booth who had a lot of good things to say about my landscape photography.
