[artshow_photo] Re: Pre-Newbie

Since no one wants to tackle this one (with good reason)I'll chime in on my thoughts!

The problem crystal is that what you are asking is rather broad - it's like saying "I know how to drive a car and want to build one - how do I do it.

So I'll answer the questions but know that every question has dozens of answers and figuring out the BEST answer is "your" job because it is all personal tastes AND part of the artistic process

> 1. What is the best/easiest way to matte?

I use show kits from Clear Bags . com/ Matting backing board and clear bags all in one - various sizes. For BIG images 20x30 at the moment I have ZERO matting on most and I contrat out on larger piaces 28x38

All depends and what you are selling to who and what you expectations are. I sell a lot of 8x12 mat's and each show I sell 1 or 2 20x20 pieces. The bigger the better. Remember - people who want art have money and big walls.

Always the big question isn't it. Go around to other shows to see what people are selling things for. I see 8x10 clear bag prints from $15 to $40 - I sell mine at $20 because everybody always have $20 in their pockets

YES

All depends - you can start out at your cost doubled as a guide. If you sell a lot - slowly raise your price. The higher the price the more the assumed worth to a buyer but . . .you can go TOO expensive.

Again - depends - ME? I bet I spent $3000 at least. Trim line canopy and LOTS of prints and frames and so forth. The "product" costs really add up. Having a box of lets say 40 8x12 matted prints is $150ish right there. It adds up! A Trim line canopy is $1800ish new but it looks GREAT. Easy Ups are $200 and will get you buy until you get serious.

When I was told it was "work" I said yea yea - right. And then I had a couple shows and it was fun. But now that I'm actually selling stuff and worrying about inventory and having to do more matting and buying frames and feeling guilty because I have not taken a new photo this week . . . . IT IS WORK - but I'm loving it.

So we are here to help - just have specific questions and let us know who you are, what your work is like and what your vision is.
