I had a problem in the field a couple of years back, where I was
getting a general error. This was on a 20D body. None of the lenses
worked -- the camera would expose, but refuse to write an image,
instead displaying a -99 error. Tried cleaning contacts, switching
lenses, resetting camera. Nothing worked.
I called Canon's tech support. After a few minutes of conversation,
the tech suggested switching the buffer setting from "Shoot w/o
card" (default is Off) to On. Somehow the camera buffer had filled
it's cache and this cleared it. Worth a shot. This command is in the
general menu section on the 20D and the 5D. Should be the same on your
camera. After the cache was cleared, I never had this error again. If
you are careful, you can leave the setting to On, or switch it back if
it solves your issue.
If it is a mechanical issue with the 24-105 lens (I agree with BK that
the whirring may be an IS or EF issue), try shooting with that lens in
manual mode -- turn off IS and turn on manual focussing. If the camera
still won't write an exposure, a call to Canon is in order. I've alway
found that their pro service would get a camera fixed in about 7-10
days.
Here's an interesting article I stumbled on while looking for rental
