Re: [artshow_photo] Canon lens [24-105] and camera[40D] malfunction?

The problem with an eraser is two-fold: abrasion and sulfur
contamination. Back when I hung out in printed circuit shops, the
sequence for plating contacts was always bright-acid tin for
conductivity and resistance to oxidation, then nickel for hardness and
because gold sticks to it really well, and then gold for conductivity
and the ultimate in corrosion resistance.

Contacts are generally plated with gold, using this sequence or similar,
when data is transferred. This often also applies to power connections
when the same connector is going to carry both data and power, as is
often the case. However, contacts that will only carry power are less
susceptible to low-level corrosion and are often plated only with tin or
tin followed by nickel. I've seen a lot of battery compartments where
the contacts were obviously silver in color, which means they didn't get
any gold. (Even one micro-inch of gold looks like gold.) If that is the
case, using an eraser is far more damaging than on gold-plated contacts.

Again, occasional use with precautions taken to make sure none of the
eraser stays in the device aren't going to lead to early failure, but
it's much better to clean these contacts properly before there is a
problem than to wait until you need to use an eraser for lack of any
other option.
