Hi,
I have one for about $42,000. Right now it's sitting in a box, I really
need to frame it.
I used to own a computer parts online store. We rarely had orders that
large, and always required a wire transfer anywhere in that range - even
from existing customers, we wouldn't even take cashier checks that high.
We had a separate checking account with our bank that we kept a $1 balance
in, that we used as an inbound wire transfer account. To receive a wire,
you have to give someone your checking account number of course, so we gave
this one out so no matter what they did they couldn't take money out of it.
The moment a wire would hit, we would transfer the money over. When a wire
hits, there's no reversing it, there's no bouncing.
We told them they had to wire the funds, and they sent a (fake) cashier
check straight to my local bank branch, with a letter stating to please
deposit it into the account. The moron assistant manager (had constant
problems with her) actually deposited it into our account THEN called us to
let us know. I came over, easily saw out that the MICR (account, routing)
numbers had been bleached and reprinted, and made her "undeposit" it so we
wouldn't get bounce fees. Contacted the originating bank and confirmed the
forgery.
Scares me to think if she hadn't called us what could have happened. That
bank didn't list wire transfers differently than deposits, and if they had
automatically made the cashier check funds available the next day we could
have fallen for it actually.
OH, also as I came in, she was tapping her pen on the check putting ink
marks all over it. Sure yelled at her for tainting evidence that the FBI
might be interested in! (They weren't as usual interested.)
Thanks!
Mike
