I did the same tour, John, but added a few days in Gaeta, before meeting up with the tour group in Rome, and then... here's my suggestion for a "must do" - I flew down to Naples, and then took a car to Sorrento. While I was there for 3 days, I went to the island of Capri - it was one of the most gorgeous places I have EVER visited. Add to that a must-do touristy-but-still-fabulous trip to the Blue Grotto, and you'll cap off any trip to Italy.
Lake Maggiore was lovely, Venice was like a former grande dame currently down on her luck.. with aging lace at the cuff of her fine sleeves.
Rome was frenetic, and one of my least favorite parts of the trip - traffic lanes are mere suggestions, and 6 lanes of traffic manage to come together into two lanes. Big-ass busses vie for space with tiny, speedy motorcycles - and somehow, it all seems to work.
But - Capri. Mwah! (kissing my fingers in a gesture of "beautiful!" or... more to the point, "Bella!")
Light and laughter,
Deb Booth

I enjoyed a great trip with the Trafalgar company, 4 years ago.it was great!
We joined the group in Rome, went to Venice, and Florence, returning to
Rome.great guided tours at the usual sights and an excellent organized/tour
guide that was with us at all the stops/rides/meals. Saw the Sistine Chapel
and the Vatican, numerous art museums, and had free time and optional
excursions. Did the Gondola ride, toured the 'XXXX' glass factory in Venice,
lots of leather goods in Florence.great wines everywhere. Toured in a luxury
bus.saw the country, the regular sites.all in a week.a bit fast for me, but
might be a great 'first leg' of your SIX WEEKS! Very envious.. I'd do it
again,
Ciao
Gianni (my name, anytime I am Italy)
Learning a bit of the language was fun and got my into the perfect amount of
'trouble'.not really, but fun for the locals too, I think.

I am planning about six weeks in Italy next year. Does anyone have
suggestions for must see or do? Where to base? Photo Ops?
Michael
