My take on the "I can do that" is "then why haven't you." No, not really, but
it's what I'm thinking I'd like to say if I am encountered with this kind of
question. I don't know about others, but I go out of my way to get the shots I
am looking for that I am hoping (key word: hoping) will sell to others. Much of
that going "out of my way" deals with daytrips to locations no more that
four hours away from where I live, so that I can get up in the morning at 3A,
out of house at 4A, to the desitnation by 8- 8:30A, all day taking photos, back
home by midnight. That way, I do not spend money on accommodations. I have a
blast and am usually alone...well, OK, always have been so far. I have a
wonderful husband who believes in my individual human nature (i.e., I don't need
a spouse as a life counselor). Then, there's the TIME on a computer
post-processing, decisions for fine art papers to print to (printing alone is a
daunting thought for many people--they believe Wal-Mart kiosks are the "way to
go"), and, finally (in my case) the matting, framing, etc. This is all not to
mention the software packages we keep up with (I use Photoshop CS5 and
Lightroom, with some purchased and some free plug-ins), and on and on. So, when
someone says "I can do that" I just trust in my instinct and know that a) they
would have and, b) no they won't. BUT, I may hang just a little sign that shows
me on the road, at the computer, in a plane, in the framing studio, etc., with
the words under it that says--"You might think you can do that, but you probably
won't." :)

On a side note, the most annoying conversations I've experienced have
been from (non-)buyers who come up, gush over this or that photo, and
want to know in detail where the location is, obviously only wanting to
know so they can go up and take their own photos there. It got to the
point that I was considering putting up a new item on my price list:
"Location Advice -- if you only want directions so you can take pictures
there yourself: pay me $300 and I'll tell you where you can go."
