EBay isn't any better. I paid for an item that was never delivered. After vainly attempting to get satisfaction from the seller, I went to eBay for help. After numerous emails detailing the transaction and my correspondence with the seller, they asked me to prove that I had NOT applied to PayPal first. How does one prove that one has not applied?

It's strictly caveat emptor out there!
