[artshow_photo] Re: Is Anyone Using a Mini Van

My first serious year doing 30+ shows I used an extended Plymouth Voyager. It had a rebuilt transmission and at $1800 it is a great investment for a first-timer (for a couple of years), running around 25mpg completely loaded. After 30K miles of shows I sold it for $1000 on ebay. It's easy to outgrow after a couple of years after your inventory becomes significant and you have more booth accessories.

I recently converted my US non-artshow vehicle to run on vegetable oil. It's something that I'm using for long trips that will include some fundraising and documentary shooting. Converting my recently purchased 03 Jetta was not difficult; it's something that is very suitable for those of us who do long haul highway miles. In the next year or two, as I consider doing a few large shows in the US (I've been selling my work online and in Asia for the past 2 years), I'll be looking for a used diesel cargo van that I might convert. For the conversion, of course, you need to be running a diesel engine. It might be hard to find a low mileage, well-running diesel cargo van.

Filtering your own vegetable oil is not difficult and I'd encourage it - think of having the stress of hundreds of dollars less of expenses for each show! It's also part of my business model too - with carbon credits that I put together and vegetable oil I think it helps me stand out a bit.

As I write, I'm on the road now. This morning I'm loading up the car with 30 gallons of vegetable oil to continue part of a long road trip. It takes a bit of work but it's not insurmountable to find suppliers in major cities on the road.

Good luck,
Noah
