It is silly. I do both. I paint, did graphic illustration and commercial- while I was in Advertising management. And I've photographed as well. For nearly 35 + yrs. Now, the economy has a downturn, yes. But, I've always done art - while working a fulltime position. Many times the fulltime position, did not give me the opportunity to work on my own "body of work", but if one is in either type of talent area, and they BOTH take talent and education to do well; it's all subjective. This is why perhaps many of the 'old school - pre-computer' talents get upset; I feel. Things have changed, like all fields. The competition field has expanded for others to participate. It's made it tougher for ALL of us.
But, both takes good talent in whatever they do, and should always be respected and not looked- down upon.
I am a believer in the best turning out, if the work is being done. I do not travel full-time as an artist/photographer to make a living. I work an administrative job, in another specific field to pay the bills. I worked in advertising many years, and grew tired of the fighting, the ego's, the back stabbing. And just wanted to be free, and paint and photograph. That - took about 10 yrs to change careers, traveling to about 4 different states before finding the best fit.
If some are not happy with being next to either talent, painter, bead artist, photographer, or whatever. Maybe, perhaps they should just change the scenery. Respect, those at all times whom do what we value. And, be respectful more so of themselves. That is where true art begins, from the inside to the outside.
