I came to the same conclusion and also went with the Epson 3880 and am real happy. Using Epsons Exhibition paper, the combo makes awesome prints. As for the ink cost, the replacements might seem steep but they are much larger then the consumer inks and last for many months.
$300 rebate and Bill Me Later for 6 months, great deal.

Another main difference is that with the 2880 when you print glossy or
black you have to open the printer and swap out the black
cartridges....It also will over spill when it prints where as the pro
models have something to catch it and you can change it. I went
through this decision myself over the summer and was leaning towards
the 2880 because it wasn't 50 lbs!!!!! The actual size of the printer
isn't so great except for the weight. A friend of mine tried to
explain that in the long run because you are getting so much more ink
it pays...I am glad I listened and got the 3880...
I love the printer and Epson's support........Roll printing isn't
important to me nor doing the shows as many of you do...I only mainly
print to exhibit....
