I've had a Western Digital MyBook die. I think I had one LaCie die too. From the WD I learned to PAY ATTENTION if a drive gets slow. And swore that I would run tests on my drives periodically, but I haven't... Gotta do that!
On the other hand, I have multiple copies of everything so I don't get overly excited about their vulnerability. Much easier to keep track of what's OK on large disk drives than on hundreds of CDs or DVDs.
The failing drives were drives that were on all the time, but I wouldn't conclude that's the reason. I do agree that some of them tend to run hot, which can make drives fail. My current primary drives stand vertically with space in between them.
One reason to have backup drives off is just one more safety against computers or programs run amuck. I run backups only on demand and watch them start. I have had my system "think" there were directories and but no files and start deleting my backup files. Hence I now have the backup program keep a copy of everything that's deleted. Of course I had another backup copy as well plus the online one... Plus the original was really there -- only appearing to have empty directories. It's a Windows XP system and it doesn't seem to be able to handle the number of USB devices I connect to it and gets confused.
