[artshow_photo] Re: Selling unframed prints

 

I think the confusion lies not in the 16x20 mat, but with the 12x18 opening. This would not be considered standard, although both 16x20 and 12x18 are standard sizes.
I'm also thinking that wherever you saw this may be a misprint. An 18" print in a 20" mat would only leave 1" of mat on each long side. Highly unlikely that someone would do this, in my opinion. Perhaps it was a 12x16 instead.
Most ready-made 16x20 mats would have openings for an 11x14. Any other opening size would need to be custom cut. The important thing to remember is to keep the outside dimension standard whenever possible. So as long as the outside dimensions remain 16x20, it would be considered a standard size for the customer.
