Besides the reliability of the drives, it's also about heat. There
may be no statistics to support it but I don't think external hard
drives are in cases (with fans) that are as cool as drives in tower
cases. It also depends on how often you have to access the external drive.
It's your workflow. Every year I purchase two back up drives and copy
data over from an older backup, adding what I've been doing since the
last backup. Two drives stay in the bank and I keep one backup on a
shelf. What I do has worked for me. Besides my own work, I have
almost 500 DVD's of images I've worked on for other artists. Those
are also backed up on external drives.
