Re: [artshow_photo] Re: Suggestions for good wide angle Canon lens

That's one of the things about lenses from other manufacturers, they do
get heavily discounted, and they don't hold their value. I'm not much of
a wide-angle shooter, but I do booth shots at art shows (I was taking my
last one yesterday evening at Best of the Northwest while people were
thundering through my maze of light stands with their carts, on their
way out.) I use a Tokina 20-35 f/2.8 for these. I bought it on eBay for
$285 from a guy in Thailand. I think the list price was $895 and B&H was
selling it for about $700.

It has been a marvelous piece of glass for me, never any issue with
sharpness either on my Kodak DCS-760 or my wife's D-50. On the other
hand, I've never seen another lens so susceptible to flare, but then I'm
not sure that's really a criticism of the Tokina lens so much as a
general unfamiliarity with wide angle shooting. I can go weeks without
mounting anything other than my trusty 60/2.8 MicroNikkor D and the
Vivitar Series 1 90/2.8 manual focus lens.

The thing weighs a ton, nice solid metal body with a handsome rough,
almost sandy, black finish on it. I really don't need anything faster
than f/5.6, but I just like the idea of a lens that has a single maximum
aperture over it's full zoom range, and I have a superstition that they
do a better job on their pro series than on the lesser lenses.

I don't know about Canon, but it's not easy to come up with real
bargains on Nikkor glass. Used Nikkor glass in mint condition tends to
sell for about the same price as mail order for new. Tokina and all the
after-market glass seems to go for steep discounts in mint condition on
eBay. Yes, even this frequent eBayer was a little nervous about sending
most of $300 off to Thailand, but in two weeks the mail carrier
presented me with a real delight. My guess is that Tokina is doing just
as good a job with their wider glass, although I suspect that wider
would really just give me that tools to explore ever greater lens flare
if I took it outside.
