In the spirit of Larry's email; I had an interesting almost - sale today. My studio has been open for the past few days in the afternoons for collectors and supporters to pick up work as I prepare to move state-side and clean out (for those of you who don't know, I've been based in Malaysia for three years). I had a couple looking at a nice new piece in a 40 x 26 inch frame. It was expensive. The man almost pulled the trigger. But then he saw my ipad laying on the table. 'Oh yeah,' he said, 'I should just buy my wife one of those.' I couldn't argue, of course. The prices are about the same. I could have argued that the iPad is an expensive device if you keep buying apps to simply your workflow and life but it was a lost cause.
It was funny because I might have really made the sale if the iPad wasn't laying on my studio table. Kind of like customers in the states that see our work and then talk about buying a camera. They get caught up in that discussion with us - or with themselves-- and then walk out of our booth. Isn't that interesting? My iPad has helped me get sales - it runs my print portfolio and lives with me or an assistant- and it helps in other ways. But it was definitely a contributing factor to the no-sale. As we go further into the digital age, I suspect customers are going to want to see images on iPads. Interesting, huh? If I was really in this for the money, perhaps I should have just handed over the ipad with the digital image!
