Here's a note that I came across a while back on a birding listserve I'm on. Richard (who gave me permission to forward this) is a birder and photographer who lives in Parsons, Kansas. He just happened to be in Dwayne's Photo and stumbled on the last manufactured roll of Kodachrome being processed.
As you may know, Kodak stopped manufacturing Kodachrome earlier this year, and Dwayne's Photo is the last lab that processes Kodachrome. And they are shutting that down tomorrow, Dec. 10.
The link to the story below does not work, but it can also be found at:

Subject: photographic history in the making
On July 12, I went to Dwayne's Photo in Parsons to get some digital pictures processed. Dwayne's is one of the largest and last processors of film in the country. (of course they now do a lot of digital) While there, the vice president of the company came in the small room with a camera man and producer from National Geographic and a freelance photojournalist, Steve McCurry of NYC to document the processing of the last roll of Kodak Kodachrome in history. Dwayne's is the last processor with equipment to process Kodachrome and they are quitting.
The photographer had shot the 36 exposures in New York City, India, Turkey and the last few in Parsons. As he discussed each exposure while on a light box, the crew taped him. I sat there for an hour and watched. It was fascinating.
For those many photographers, both professional and amateur on the list, you may read the whole story and see pictures at www.parsonssun.com.
Search for Kodachrome and the July 13 story will pop up.
I put this on the list since it seems photography is closely intertwined with our birding activities and I know we have so many superlative photographers in our midst. I am also aware of the tremendous impact kodachrome has had on photography. It is kind of a sad note.
Since this is not directly bird related, please make replies or comments to me off list.
