Have you contacted a Mac dealer? Replacing the hard drive should not be a major ordeal, although I've never owned anything but 2 pro level Macs. On the pro level Macs replacing a hard drive is usually a simple plug & play. Not sure what would be involved with an iMac, but it certainly is worth a call to your local Mac dealer. My 10 year old Mac G4 currently has 4 separate internal hard drives, all installed by me, a non-tekkie.
Call your local Mac dealer.
