The shows that still take checks will usually send it back if you are
rejected. They will request a self addressed stamped envelope (SASE)
so that they don't have to pay the postage on the rejection letter,
and if you are accepted, they will send acceptance information in it
at the same time they cash your check.
Quicken does a very good job at tracking your checking account. If you
don't use it yet, I highly recommend it. You can view your register by
chronological order, check order, or uncleared status. Reconciliation
is also a lot easier with it than the paper method.
I would send a check over a money order. Keep a xerox copy to prove
you sent it.
I'm with Larry. There are very few shows that require booth fees up
front that I will apply to. I had a big tiff with Vero Beach one year
because they cashed my check before sending the acceptance letter.
Most of the larger shows have gone to ZAPP or JASV, and credit card
acceptance. Makes it easier for the artist, that's for sure. Requiring
a booth fee upfront is archaic and wrong.
