The alternative to a smartphone is something like Virgin Mobile's mifi 2200 which gives you a wifi hotspot that is pay as you go. 10 Days for $10 with a usage ceiling--perfect when you are doing shows two weekends in a row and CC processing doesn't use that much bandwidth. The hotspot can be secured/MAC filtered so only your device(s) can hit it.
I've not tried it yet--it is part of my Comm plan once I finish this degree and am able to get back onto the circuit. But at least in theory it sounds like the perfect alternative to the recurring smartphone data plan.
