I had a similar problem back with LR 1.4. After 5 (five!) crashes I started downloading from the memory card to a unique folder in 'Finder' that I named "$$$ Download Folder". I use a multi-card reader not the camera. Then I go to LR & import from the temporary ($$$) folder rather than directly from the card. Once I am satisfied the images are copied to where I want them to reside, I delete the copies in the $$$ folder, leaving it ready for the next card. It seemed to do the trick. I'm still doing it that way.
