Dear Oscar,
I just finished 2 semesters of web design at Ivy Tech Community College in Indianapolis. When working in Dreamweaver we were encouraged to make the website 955 pixels wide and 600 pixels high (above the fold so that you do not have to scroll). When we were in WordPress we changed the header area using the size of whatever the header was. And as Larry said, for older computers, smaller sizes are better. The height of 600 pixels was just a starter and could be expanded if you need more content area; however, again people do not like to scroll and will often leave your site. The other issue you need to deal with is how fast your site loads. That is normally why you have small thumbnail pictures that load quickly and are linked to large pictures. Large pictures usually should not be bigger than 500 or 600 pixels on the largest side. The size of the picture should not be more than 60K (or should be sliced in Photoshop). Also, normally you put a watermark on the picture. By the way, WordPress was much easier to use than going back to college to learn Dreamweaver! There is a real reason why you pay Larry or others to do your website! Hope this helps.
