Services such as Carbonite are not really meant as an alternative storage
solution, but for keeping a copy of files on your drive, etc., in case of an
unrecoverable HD problem. Basically "as well as" and not "instead of". For
which they are fine for.
The other problem is that if you should not be able to pay for a month or
two (even through no fault of your own), your account is likely to be closed
or suspended so you will have no access to your files, and even worse, the
account and files could be deleted.
The easiest and possibly cheapest option is to use an external drive or two
- one for the storage, and one for backups. That won't protect your data if
your house burns down, so you could also burn the files to DVDs and ask a
friend to look after them.
