This is my webinar; I'm here every day. To create a website and manage it properly you need to know HTML, MySQL, PERL or PHP and maybe a little Javascript, and then you can just examine the sites that seem to do well to see how they structure things.
Or you can get a website from Photoshelter and a blog or two and they will do all that for you. A real key is to keep adding images and building out the site day after day, month after month and year after year. It's what I think of as "gravity". Gravity allows you to have a presence all your own; people will link to you and after awhile you won't have to do much in the way or marketing because your excellent content will market your site for you. Gravity comes from great content and/or lots of content. Not all of us can create great content but we can all work hard and create lots of content.
Think about this: you go to one site and they have 100 beautiful photos that are some of the best you've ever seen; another site has 100,000 images and only 1% are as good as the first site; which site is more valuable to you? Assuming that the second site is well structured and you don't have to wade through a lot of bad images it will offer more really good images and much more choice overall. You may initially be attracted to the first site but in the long run you will likely go to the second site much more often.
Just post 10 images a day to your blog and in a year you have over 3,500 online. Even if you just include an email link and phone number you can do some pretty effective marketing and build a following over time.
