Sean, don't make the same mistake that those who throw stones at you make. They insist that their way is the only way and refuse to listen to someone who has succeeded using non-traditional methods, whether that be you or me.

There are many different ways to generate income with your photos and while you have chosen focusing on the photography and leaving the marketing to iStock or whomever, I have spent 15 years building my own marketing engine and I can assure you that it works and anyone who uses this method will want all the links from other photographers and photography related sites they can get.

Search engines like Google are associative, meaning they want to define you as this, that, or the other and so having links from other photographers suggests that you are a successful photographer and when a buyer goes to search for "photos of elderly couple walking in the park" your image will come up to the image buyer looking for that photo.

Understanding these basic things allows each of us, if we wish, to compete with the big agencies by focusing on our specialty. If you shoot wildlife in Idaho then you should focus on trading links with Idaho photographers and perhaps, any websites associated with wildlife and Idaho. That may not be a huge market but it is possible for a little guy to dominate it with nothing but hard work and some decent photos.
