Yes - the thickness of the stretcher bars is a very important consideration. Here, they are available as 7/8" or 1.5".
To add the border for the canvas wrap - Perfect Resize by OnOne Software makes it very easy. In one step, you can resize your image and specify the wrap to be added. I'm trialing the software now in my preparation for an exhibition and am satisfied with the results.
