[artshow_photo] Re: Director's Chair

You did say that you were on a tight budget, so you might just want to forego a director's chair for the time being, and just buy an el cheapo outdoor folding chair. Then after a few successful shows, upgrade. Don't buy into the misconception that sitting in a director's chair gives you the perception of being more "professional."

That said, when it comes to director's chairs, here's my experienced opinion -
Unsupported canvas seats are probably the most uncomfortable. They offer no "behind the knee" support when sitting, nor do they offer much back support. The cheap ones (like from Pier One, I believe) are also quite wobbly. They can easily fall backwards. And trust me, from one who has experienced this "trip," it is a long, long way from vertical to horizontal when they do fall over. I would not trust sitting in one again.

I find slatted seats (made of wood) to be the most comfortable. And the ultimate, in my opinion, has a slatted seat with a slight upward curve under area right above your knees. You'll probably pay more for such a chair, but this may be one area where you don't want to skimp. When I bought my cargo van, I looked a long time for one with captain's chairs & arm rests, plus creature features like auto windows, locks, mirrors, cruise, etc. My thinking - if you're going to be a "road scholar," why bounce around all day in an uninsulated van on vinyl seats. This is your home away from home. Be comfortable.
Same with the chair that you're going to be sitting in off & on all day. Get one that will be comfortable AND supportive (back and legs).
