Drobo is a good solution. I originally bought it to use with TimeMachine. But as my internal storage grew I outpaced the capacity in my Drobo and TimeMachine basically came to a halt. The general wisdom is that you need 2-3x your storage volume on TimeMachine. With only 6TB in the Drobo I am about 1.5X so that made me change backup strategy's.
Drobo is a non standard, proprietary RAID system. There are lots of other solutions these days. G-Tech, OWC for Apple and probably even more solutions on the PC side.
Depends on what you need, how much space, RAID, Hardware powered RAID and the list goes on.
