You didn't mention what you are using for photo editing but monitor calibration is only part of the equation. The lab needs to give you an ICC profile for the combination of printer/paper they are using. In Photoshop you add this profile and you will be able to do softproofing, that is, simulating the final output to the printer/paper combination. I don't know if Sam's or Costco offer profiles. If they don't you are going to get inconsistent results.
Prolabs like Bayphoto give you the profiles that they use. Part of the reason they are more expensive is the attention to quality control. Having owned labs in the past, unless they are doing control strips daily to manage chemistry balance/control then there won't be anything consistent about the processing. Couple that with no profiles and you are experiencing the result.
Profile temp I use is 6500.
You are on the right track though. Calibration will lead to more consistent results.
