It is naive to believe that the blame for this photo sales recession lies within each of us; it happened because of factors largely beyond our control, including the democratization of photography with the shift to digital and the 30 year fundamental shifts in the economy since 1980 (offshoring of jobs, shift of wealth from the middle class to the rich, destruction of unions, rise of big box stores, the country and individuals living on credit, rise in health care costs, and the diminishing of wages). Yes, we can each change course to some degree to try and recoup some of those lost sales, but a seismic shift has occurred and the great sales are not coming back.
In year 2000, when I last did the great Saint Louis Art Fair, I used the proceeds to pay off my mortgage. Good luck with that now!
