Hey Josh: I echo your assessment, the travel rarely pays off unless the show is know to be a winner (and by known meaning more than a rating with Sunshine Artists).Problem being, the ecomony has created more competion than that eliminated by the slump. So many without work, or those that retired that need the income along with the relative ease of the electronic application process seem to be making for record amounts of applications. Kinda wish I was in the business of taking show applications!
I will do about the same number of shows as last year. Not much profit, but always an adventure or two.
Stay well amigo.Keep knoocking them dead.

No - I am certainly not taking 2011 off, however, I am staying close to home
and only applying for the shows I know I will do well at. That is more of a
decision based on my availability - I am pretty busy with my other
businesses and only want to spend time at the shows that will pay off the
most.
I actually feel like 2010 was one of my best - had my best show ever last
year...and additionally, a lot of great opportunities for showing and
selling my work outside of art shows surfaced as well.
I can't really comment on how it is now compared to 10 years ago...as I was
not selling back then. But for me, it gets better each year. I am not too
worried about the economy personally.
