This is an update to this old thread. I started my online backup with
Carbonite on November 12, and as of today (January 5) I have 104 GB uploaded so
it appears I can get about 50 GB per month at the current upload rate.
They don't seem to have throttled back my upload speed having reached the
100 GB level so perhaps it'll continue to go at this rate. With over half a
terabyte of data I'm looking at using most of my free 1 year subscription
just uploading.
I sure hope I never have to download my backed up data, but I may want to
remotely access it someday so it may be handy to have. It'll feel good to
have a "last resort" kind of backup out there should my main hard drive and
3 external hard drives (2 on site and 1 off site) all crap out at once.
I'll update the group in another month or so of the progress.
I still, of course, use my rotating external hard drives as the primary
backup method so I just consider this online backup an experiment. Based on
an article I read today it's the way of the future (see link below).
