Well, that depends a bit. On plain paper, a bw laser printer will print
sharper text than any inkjet printer, mainly due to the ink's spreading out
a bit on the very absorbant paper, a phenomonon known as "dot gain". On
inkjet paper, though, the inkjet printer will print very nice text, and
it'll be able to print photos much better than the laser printer. If you
need to print a lot of BW text pages, a laser printer is really the way to
go. They can be very small, fast printing, clog free, and inexpensive. If
you really can only have one printer, and you want to print good photos,
then an inkjet can certainly do the job, as well as being a pretty good text
printer on plain paper. For letter printing on plain paper, if you rate a
dot-matrix printer a 1 for quality and a 1200 dpi laser printer a 10, an
Epson 4880 would receive about a 6 or 7. Using inexpensive inkjet coated
paper raises that rating to a 9.
