It seems I might need to do some test printing on different papers and see if my
newly trained eye can spot the nuances. Kim, you make some valid points and
good food for thought.

I might be late into this topic, but I find that different "topics" warrant
different textures. To elaborate, let's say there is something like a "earthy"
sort of close-up scene on a rainy/stormy day--a photo that could probably be
best rendered nicely to a black and white and printed on a matte paper surface;
versus a sunny-day picnic photo of the picnic basket on a checked tablecloth wth
the focus on crsipy fried chicken--a photo in muted colors printed on luster
surface; versus something like a steaming mug of coffee sitting atop a ground
metal table with the interior of a coffee shop blurred in the background--I
think a prime candidate for the brilliance that a good, glossy photo paper
surface would produce.
So, to me, it would depend on the "texture" of the scene being printed.
