I can happily say that economic forecasts are optimistic here in Massachusetts. And for the record (excuse my tangent) the health care plan is awesome and helping - not hurting the economy... and we laugh at pundits who claim otherwise. 98% insured. Fact is - it's a good plan. Small business love it because their employees can join an income scaled plan from the state.
We're expecting a slow steady recovery thanks to our governor's leadership in green industry and investments in education.
What my take away is from this summer's shows... where are people who are ready and able to purchase art going to be? I don't think small town community crafts fairs where people want to buy "useful " so much as high end vacation resorts. Do I adjust product to the market. or adjust where I market?

I agree with you that the economy is steadily improving, for which I credit President Obama's actions. But there is going to be a several year lag time before the perception of improvement trickles down to art shows.
Some of the best areas of the country for art shows are where there was a lot of home construction going on, but most home construction has disappeared into the gaping mouth of the great recession. Bare walls were an impetus for people to come to art show, where they could get affordable fine art; but bare paychecks keep people from spending.
I would like to be optimistic, but 2010 brought some rude shocks. One show in California only brought in about 15% of my level of sales from six years before. A major show in Washington was 40% of what it had been two years before. Yet show fees had risen during those years.
I've got my fingers crossed. But today I got a check for $100 from a gallery --along with a notice that the gallery was closing. On the other hand, some new opportunities have arisen, so I'm hoping to expand into some other areas of selling my work.
