The short answer is that once I decided (by almost going bankrupt) that I wasn't going to make it with a Getty Images type of business model I went back to doing what I am good at and that is web marketing of images: photos, posters, art prints, clip art, etc, and that is when I started placing ads on Acclaim Images.
The ads are served by Google Adsense and they do an amazing job of monetizing web traffic, which I have always been good at generating.
BTW, I would gladly trade links with Getty Images or Corbis; because of their high pagerank I would gain more than they, but you can rest assured that such large companies don't even consider doing that type of web marketing.
Whether or not anyone else should have ads or not is a question that they must answer. Ads and affiliate programs are what I initially succeeded with online and are what I am comfortable with and good at so I go with it.
