Although it wasn't what I intended, this has been an interesting digression -- even though I "know" about resolution, dpi, ppi, pixels, etc. I quite often find myself falling into the trap of thinking that dpi and ppi matter, probably because so many show applications, upload instructions, etc. misuse the terminology.
For what it's worth, I went back to Facebook yesterday and re-uploaded my latest image, resized to 500 px on the long side and did not get the "high resolution download" option. Although the image on the screen was smaller, it was good enough for someone to tell whether they like it or not. So that will be my standard from now on.
I'm not overly concerned about someone downloading pictures for their own use, but neither do I want to make it easy for them. I do "give away" prints in some circumstances but I'd rather control to whom I give them. Different strokes, though . . . just my preference.
