[artshow_photo] Re: How original do your photos have to be accepted into a top fine art show?

You have to keep in mind that you face two sets of judges.

One set is the entry judges who decide whether or not you get into the show.

The other set is people who actually buy things at the shows.

Originality may mean something to the entry judges. But if you want to win the "Credit Card Choice Award" at any show, no matter how pretentious it pretends to be, you had better darned well offer quite a few beautifully realized, technically excellent, absolutely recognizable cliches.

And that's the truth. If you doubt, please note that Peter Lik's best sellers are almost without exception absolute screaming cliches. He just sold one for $1,000,000 in Australia, and one for $125,000 in Las Vegas. Total cliches. And any gallery owner will finally concede that about the stuff he carries if you press him hard enough. OK some exceptions, but very few.

Bias you entry images towards art/originality, and your actual show images towards cliche/recognizability. The public feels comfortable about buying stuff that is somehow familiar, and not so comfortable about that which is truly original. I bring some of both to the fairs. The original stuff brings home the compliments, but the cliches bring home the bacon.

OK, sometimes you do well with a cliche with an original twist, but you need both parts to sell. Novelty does help, but usually only in support of a cliche.
