Perception can have something to do with your success. Don't underestimate the value of your art. If you price it according to some module of retailing; cost X markup, then you are not valuing your talent but merely selling a product.
It does not necessarily take experience in doing art shows to make the leap to high end shows, it's about the work. Does it have Appeal to the market you are in? People with $ to spend on art, and have nice houses, go to better art shows and will spend what you charge if they like the piece.
So, make good art and price it for those folks. You might be surprised, moving up to that level is worthy of the investment to look good, and travel distances to find the right buyer.
