Re: [artshow_photo] Commerical Vechicle Status

Yes there is a lot more, in fact there is a book of regulations that every
CMV driver must have that explains the law. As for lights, if your vehicle
qualifies as a CMV then there is a minimum number of lights required. DOT
does not care how many lights you have as long as they are DOT certified.
BUT, if you have the lights (like you see on some rigs) then they must be in
working order.

As for hours of service, all CMV drivers that go more than 50 miles from
home base are required to comply with the 14 hour rule, it's not 10 hours
anymore. You can drive 11 hours out of 14 then you are required to take a
continuous 10 hour break. Law does not require you to sleep, just take a 10
hour break. If you have a sleeper on your truck then you can stay in your
truck. If you do not have a sleeper and stay in your truck then you have to
log it as "on duty not driving" and it goes against the 14 hours. If you are
caught sitting or sleeping in your non-sleeper truck the DOT officer will
look at your log book and more than likely put you out of service for a 10
hour period. They deem this as "on duty not driving" because non-sleeper
truck drivers are required to be away from the truck during the 10 hour
break. In short, If your day starts at 8:00 AM then your day stops at 10:00
PM. This is regardless of what happen during the 14 hours. Once you log 70
hours in 7 days you are required to take a 34 hour break to reset your 70
hours. I rarely exceed the 70 hours because I only drive and log 8 hours a
day. If you wonder why so many big trucks are speeding, these new hours of
service regulations are partly why.

I dealt with the rules and regulations of the trucking industry for 35
years, mostly in the maintenance management field. Shooting pictures is
much easier and a lot more fun.
