If you buy off eBay you stand a chance of saving a lot of money and
occasionally getting a pirate copy that has to be returned. EBay's very
existence depends on not allowing pirate software, and they are
extremely good at catching it. And if you end up with software that
won't run, you'll have no problem getting your purchase price refunded.
I've actually had them catch a vendor selling pirate copies which worked
just fine, at which point they refunded my purchase, closed his account,
and then notified me that I should discontinue using the software but
did nothing to actually require that I return it.
An upgrade copy is only what you want if you can get it for
substantially less than a full copy. If you get a full copy you can sell
your previous copy, and you don't have to save the older version in
order to install the newer one. I hate to think how many times I've had
to spend an hour searching for original disks to get an upgrade to install.
I've bought a ton of software off eBay over the years. Haven't had a
problem for ages. I'd much rather have a used full version than a brand
new upgrade.
