James,
This is really good information. Though, I have a question (not to
hijack this topic, but I think that it's related). For me, I primarily
sell oil paintings (large and small). One large oil painting usually
makes my booth fee and two will make booth fee/travel expenses, etc.
The prints that I sell are about the same prices that Ben's does
(generally, I have one print size (matted 11 x 14) that I sell for $20.
For any given show, I usually sell one large painting, a couple of
mid-size paintings, a couple of small paintings and then about 2 dozen
small matted prints. I almost always make about 4 times the booth fee
(for mid-size shows which are 200 vendors), unless the show's attendance
is really really down.
You and Larry mention that these prices are too cheap. Guess that
is the trick. What would you suggest the prices be around? Is this
different for photographer's versus oil painters? I only use the matted
prints because there are a lot of people who loves the original
painting, but can't afford it.
