Ahh, you just learned a good lesson. One of the best pieces of advice for an artist, especially a beginner, is to attend any local art fairs, or make some trips, to see the event. There is so much to learn and really it is always worth your time to do this especially when you are not participating in the show. Not only do you get an idea of the crowd, the quality of the exhibitors, what kind of sales are being made but also great ideas for booth layout, how to display, a good look at others in your media, pricing structures, types of tents, weights, etc.
When we were doing shows (even after many years) we would attend other events to take a look. In addition, when we were in a show we'd set up early and then walk to the show to gather info.
