Re: [artshow_photo] Re: CS5 vs. Lightroom or PLUS LightRoom

Oh man Van - I'm a little moist after reading that. My main problem now is
that I have images that take me forever to find even with my somewhat antiquated
system. It all seemed so easy when I began but as this little career change
keeps growing my current database system (my brain) is losing track of single
images.

Ordered CS5 upgrade and LR 3 30% off last night! Now I have two things to run
to the mail box for.

CS5/LR3 and Strat-O-Matic Baseball! LOL

That seems odd. The reason the database image management of LR is so
strongly appealing is the fantastic amount of complexity it eliminates.

If I'm even remotely clever I can name the files and embed keywords
during the import operation such that any future use of the files
becomes almost trivial. For example, I generally include the client name
in the filename, along with the title of the work or the product. If
it's a headshot or booth shot I put that in the keywords. So if George
Brunjes (a local chocolatier who also happens to be an occasional public
speaker on an unrelated topic) asks me to send his publicity shot to
some conference it's just a matter of using the "any text field" search
(always one click away, if it's not already on screen) for "GB" and
"head". Out of thousands of images, in a matter of seconds (single-digit
seconds) I have a contact sheet array of all the shots from both
portrait sessions with him, I note which one is flagged, click on it,
enter Control+Shift+E, set the export options requested (size, sRGB vs
Adobe 1998, quality, etc.), and I'm done.

This wasn't all that impressive when I had thousands of image spread
around my network and dozens of images in LightRoom, but everything I've
shot since the beta has gone into LR and now I wouldn't want to live
without it. No, I didn't suck all of the existing images in, only the
ones that had a future. (Actually the shoots involving work that would
have a future.)

I haven't done it yet, but one of these days I'll remember to pull up
all the images of stuff I've sold on eBay and delete them. But as they
aren't on screen, because of the powerful filtering, it hasn't seemed
even vaguely important.

To make a long story short, LR is all about eliminating complexity from
your workflow.
